What is the definition of Vintage clothes?
February 3, 2025
We are currently diving into our archives, curating some of our most loved pieces from the past 15 years. The YUNA YANG Collection debuted at New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010, marking a 14+ year journey of timeless design. Many of our most beloved pieces continue to be in demand, with loyal customers frequently requesting re-productions or continuous production as part of a signature collection line.
With Gen Z’s growing love for vintage fashion, we are considering hosting vintage collection shopping events this year, featuring some of our most iconic pieces. However, this raises an important question: Should we call it a “Vintage Collection” or a “Retro Collection”?
By definition, true vintage clothing is at least 20 years old, while anything younger is typically categorized as retro, secondhand, or pre-loved. That said, looking at vintage stores across the world, the 20-year rule doesn’t always seem strictly followed.
Curious about the distinction, I asked ChatGPT for the definition of vintage clothing, and here’s what I found:
“Vintage clothes refer to clothing items that are at least 20 years old but not yet antique (which is usually considered 100 years or older). Vintage pieces often reflect the fashion trends of their time and may be highly valued for their quality, craftsmanship, and historical significance.”
What do you all think? Should we call this a “Vintage Collection,” or would “Retro Collection” be a better fit?
